This course addresses the complex pathology of traumatic brain injury (TBI), including primary and secondary injury. Understanding the types of TBI provides nurses with a foundation for optimized assessment and care. Throughout the course, diagnosis and management are reviewed, in addition to nursing-specific considerations.

At the end of this series, the health care professional will be able to:

  • Identify primary etiologies for traumatic brain injury.
  • Differentiate types of traumatic brain injury.
  • Discuss nursing-specific considerations for patients with traumatic brain injury.
  • Recognize nursing role in managing intracranial pressure for the TBI patient.
