Event Details

Course introduction:
This lecture will consider how the clinical neurophysiology study supplements the clinical history and examination of a motor neuron disease patient. The various components of the electrodiagnostic study will be reviewed to appreciate the pathophysiology of motor neuron disease. Techniques for improving diagnostic yield will be discussed. The last portion will consider newer techniques in monitoring motor neuron disease.

Course Objectives:
At the conclusion of this eSeminar the participants will be able to:

  • How to plan an electrodiagnostic (EDX) study of motor neuron disease based on clinical findings
  • Enhanced assessment of fibrillation and fasciculation potentials
  • Understanding the implications of denervation- reinnervation
  • New methods in tracking motor neuron disease.

CE Credits:
This course has been approved for 1.0 contact hour of CEC by the American Association of Electrodiagnostic Technologists (AAET)

Dr. Barkhaus is a Professor of Neurology and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and founder and Director of the ALS Program as well as Director of the Neuromuscular Diseases Program at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Dr. Barkhaus completed his medical education and training at Wayne State University in Detroit followed by a fellowship in EMG at the University of Minnesota under Dr. William Kennedy and additional training in quantitative EMG in Uppsala Sweden with Dr. Eric Stålberg and Duke University with Dr. Donald Sanders. Also, Dr. Barkhaus began a productive collaboration in EMG research with Dr. Sanjeev Nandedkar, who at the time, was a research engineer in the Duke EMG laboratory and currently is a senior consultant here at Natus Medical. Drs. Barkhaus and Nandedkar have been collaborators since 1986 on multiple research and educational projects.

Additionally, Dr. Barkhaus has authored or coauthored 65 peer-reviewed publications and 40 peer-reviewed books, chapters, and reviews. He received the Distinguished Researcher Award from the American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic medicine in 2015.
