Course introduction:
When confronted to neuromuscular junction disorders, Repetitive Nerve Stimulation and Single Fiber EMG both play a role in daily diagnostic activities. RNS provides useful information even though the pathophysiology of Myasthenia Gravis covers more mechanisms than the story of antibodies. At the same time, Single Fiber EMG has become a key component in AANEM guidelines.
In this presentation, we will be covering the pathophysiology of Myasthenia Gravis and EDX protocols for both techniques. In addition, practical tips & tricks will be provided to overcome pitfalls of accurate recording and interpretation.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this seminar the participants will be able to:
- Key concepts in pathophysiology of Myasthenia Gravis.
- Present protocol for Repetitive Nerve Stimulation.
- Understand the role of Single Fiber EMG.
- Overcome pitfalls in RNS/SFEMG recording and interpretation.
This course is approved for a total of 1.0 CEC hour approved by AAET – The American Association of Electrodiagnostic Technologists

Pascal Proot, MD is a neurologist. Dr. Proot graduated medical faculty of Ghent University, Belgium in 2003, as well as the residency in 2008. Since 2010 he has been working at the department of neurophysiology of the University of Ghent in Belgium as a member of academic staff, teaching EMG to the young neurologists of the University.
He has been also working in the Netherlands as a doctor neurologist with a special interest in electrodiagnostic studies and headache. He is known to be leading a multidisciplinary headache centre, wich was founded in 2012. He is known also to have been published in highly cited journals, focusing on the importance of the clinical integration of pharmaceutical treatment, physiotherapy and psychotherapy.
For many years he has been a member of AANEM, where he actively takes part in annual meetings and other events of the organisation. He shares his experience and observations via educating other neurologists. Since many years, he has been engaged with organising (hands-on) educational EDX courses in several European countries.
