Course introduction:
The radiculopathy caused by compression of the nerve root is an indication for neurophysiological evaluation. EDX is important for accurate diagnosis and seems valuable for better prognosis after surgery. The pathophysiological process explains the abnormalities seen during the EDX-exam. As a part of the nerve conduction studies, late responses will be discussed. We will focus on the 6-muscle screen suggested in literature to increase sensitivity and specificity of the results of the exam. Is there an ideal time-window to perform the exam?
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this seminar the participants will be able to:
- To correlate radicular syndrome with imaging results with the help of EDX.
- To understand the AANEM guidelines for radiculopathy assessment.
- To recognise the involved nerve root with a 6-muscle screen and the paraspinal muscle examination.
- To value EDX for accurate prognosis (after surgical treatment).

Dr. Pascal Proot
Pascal Proot, MD is a neurologist. Dr. Proot graduated medical faculty of Ghent University, Belgium in 2003, as well as the residency in 2008. Since 2010 he has been working at the department of neurophysiology of the University of Ghent in Belgium as a member of academic staff, teaching EMG to the young neurologists of the University.
He has been also working in the Netherlands as a doctor neurologist with a special interest in electrodiagnostic studies and headache. He is known to be leading a multidisciplinary headache centre, wich was founded in 2012. He is known also to have been published in highly cited journals, focusing on the importance of the clinical integration of pharmaceutical treatment, physiotherapy and psychotherapy.
For many years he has been a member of AANEM, where he actively takes part in annual meetings and other events of the organisation. He shares his experience and observations via educating other neurologists. Since many years, he has been engaged with organising (hands-on) educational EDX courses in several European countries.
