Course introduction:
In Neurosurgery and Neurocritical Care External Ventricular Drains are fundamental to providing care to neurosurgical patients with accumulated cerebrospinal fluid and elevated intracranial pressure. In this course, Dr. David Darrow and Dr. Truong Do from the Department of Neurosurgery in the University of Minnesota School of Medicine will outline when an EVD should be considered, physiologic principles how a drain functions, and the procedural steps necessary for drain placement. Through case-based examples, we will highlight mal-placed drains and how to troubleshoot difficult clinical situations that may be encountered by medical providers.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this eSeminar the participants will be able to:
- Describe the indications, physiologic principles, and risks for placement of External Ventricular Drains (EVDs)
- Describe the procedural steps for placement of an EVD
- Recognize the potential etiologies of drain misplacement and techniques for troubleshooting

Dr. David Darrow
Dr. David Darrow
MD, MPH
Dr. David Darrow is an award-winning neurosurgeon/researcher who joined the department as an Assistant Professor after completing his residency at the University of Minnesota. He earned his MD and MPH (Master’s in Public Health) from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, and a BS in physics and mathematics from Texas A&M University in College Station. As a clinician, Dr. Darrow treats patients with pain (trigeminal neuralgia, facial pain, chronic pain), movement disorders (Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, dystonia), neuropsychiatric disease, and epilepsy. Thanks to support from MnDRIVE (Minnesota’s Discovery, Research, and InnoVation Economy) and the Institute of Translational Neuroscience, most of Dr. Darrow’s time will be devoted to research and continuing the work he is doing with in the Herman Darrow Lab with Dr. Alex Herman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. “Alex and I are focused on the main systems of the brain – reward, cognitive, and mood,” he said. “We want to know how all these systems affect one another to better understand how we can treat chronic pain, epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, and mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and addiction.”

Dr. Truong Do
Dr. Truong Do

Dr. Truong “Huy” Do is a neurological surgery resident in his fifth year of training at the University of Minnesota. He earned his MD from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities Medical School, and a BS in Biology from the University of Minnesota. As a resident, Dr. Do’s clinical interests are in the areas of cranial and spinal neurotrauma because of the remarkable capacity for the neurological system to recover from such injuries. His research efforts are focused on leveraging the use of national databases to identify disparities in neurotrauma care. He hopes to better understand the impact of patients’ social, ethnic, economic, and racial backgrounds on the receipt of neurosurgical care and on their long-term outcomes. With the knowledge gained from this research, he hopes to improve the delivery of care to patients with traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries.
