Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is perhaps the most common reason for referring a patient for an electrodiagnostic (EDX) study. The subject complains of tingling and numbness in thumb, index, long or ring fingers. They may also have wrist pain and weakness of thumb. The symptoms are often worse at night. The underlying pathology is a focal lesion of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel, usually from nerve compression. The EDX studies are performed to demonstrate slowing, conduction block and/or axonal degeneration of the median nerve.
