Mismatch Negativity (MMN)

EN: Event-related potentials (ERP) in clinical practice allow to diagnose alterations of cognitive functions. As part of this test group, Mismatch Negativity measures the difference of reaction when a standard repetitive sound is randomly replaced by an oddball sound. It relies on an automatic process that detects the difference between one sound and the sensory memory trace of previous stimuli. It does not require patient’s attention.

FR: Dans la pratique clinique, les potentiels évoqués associés à un évènement (ERP) permettent de diagnostiquer une altération des fonctions cognitives. Dans ce groupe de tests, la négativité de discordance mesure la différence de réaction lorsque l’on remplace aléatoirement un son répétitif « standard » par un son déviant [« oddball »]. Elle s’appuie sur un processus automatique qui détecte la différence entre un son et les traces de mémoire sensorielle des stimuli précédents. Elle n’exige pas l’attention du patient.

DE: Ereigniskorrelierte Potentiale (ERP) ermöglichen in der klinischen Praxis die Diagnose von Veränderungen kognitiver Funktionen. Mismatch-Negativität (MMN), eine Komponente dieser Testgruppe, misst die Abweichung der Reaktion, wenn ein repetitiver auditorischer Stimulus („Standard“) willkürlich durch einen seltenen auditorischen Stimulus („Oddball“) ersetzt wird. MMN nutzt hierfür einen automatischen Prozess, der die Abweichung zwischen einem einzelnen auditorischen Stimulus und im sensorischen Gedächtnis gespeicherten Stimuli erkennt. Dabei ist keine Aufmerksamkeit des Patienten erforderlich.
