A penile erection happens when there is an increased blood flow into the penis whereby this blood flow is usually stimulated by sexual thoughts or direct contacts with the penis. The muscle in the penis relaxes when the man is sexually excited and this allows the blood flow through the penile arteries. The blood flow fills the two chambers in the penis known as the corpora cavernosa. When these chambers are filled with blood, the penis grows rigid. When the muscle contracts, the accumulated blood flows out through the penile veins, ending the erection.
