Electroencephalographic seizures are common in critically ill children in the PICU, often only identified using EEG monitoring given most are subclinical, and high seizure exposure is associated with unfavorable outcomes. Thus, recent practice guidelines advocate for increasing EEG monitoring use in critically ill children to identify electrographic seizures. This lecture by Dr. Nicholas Abend will provide a comprehensive summary of electroencephalographic seizure epidemiology and outcomes, EEG monitoring indications, and targeted approaches to EEG monitoring.
