aEEG is increasingly used in the neonatal intensive care unit for indications not related to neonatal HIE. As a Cerebral Function monitor, it is increasingly recognized as a useful tool for monitoring high risk infants. This eSeminar is designed to highlight the different conditions in which Cerebral Function monitoring may contribute to the care of high risk infants in the NICU such as premature infants, infants with congenital heart diseases and infants with inborn errors of metabolism.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand the basic ingredients of premature infants cerebral activity
  • Describe the influence of different clinical situations on the cerebral activity of the premature infant
  • Discuss the association of cerebral function early in life with outcome
  • Understand the added value of brain monitoring in high risk neonates with congenital heart malformations and inborn errors of metabolism
