External ventricular drains are fundamental to providing care to neurosurgical patients with accumulated cerebrospinal fluid and elevated intracranial pressure. In this course, we will outline when an EVD should be considered, physiologic principles that outline how a drain functions, and the procedural steps necessary for drain placement. Through case-based examples, we will highlight mal-placed drains and how to troubleshoot difficult clinical situations that may be encountered by medical providers.
