We will study and review basic electrical theory, instrumentation, peripheral nerve anatomy and physiology, recording methods and waveforms recognition with clinical correlations. You will emphasize the safety of the patient. In the lab you will learn the basics of nerve and muscle stimulation and recording, using surface electrodes.

Dr. Christoph Neuwirth has focused since nearly 20 years on neuromuscular disorders. Beside clinical practice, his research interests are on electrophysiological methods to estimate the number of lower motor neurons (MUNIX) and clinical trials in diseases like ALS, Myasthenia gravis and other rare neuromuscular disorders. The application and teaching of electrophysiological methods is one further main interest in his daily practice as the Deputy Head at the Swiss Reference Center for Rare Neuromuscular Diseases, based at the Cantonal Hospital St. Gallen, Switzerland.

Prof. Dr. Markus Weber is Professor of Neurology at the University of Basel and serves as chief of the Neuromuscular Diseases Unit/ ALS Clinic at the Kantonsspital St.Gallen in Switzerland. He has worked for more than 30 years in the field of neuromuscular disorders with a special focus on Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and clinical neurophysiology. His main research interests cover outcome measures, clinical neurophysiology, trial designs and cannabinoid research. Prof. Weber is a member of the ENCALS executive committee and research committee of the European Neuromuscular Center (ENMC). He has previously served as co-chair of the European Academy of Neurology scientific panel on ALS and FTD.

With over 30 years of experience, Sanjeev is an award winning author, editor and reviewer, researcher, instrument design engineer, teacher, and clinical expert in the EMG field. He has delivered lectures, workshops and seminars in over 25 countries at universities, hospitals and EMG conferences. As an editor, Sanjeev started the “EMG on DVD” educational series. In collaboration with other clinicians, he developed Motor Unit Number Index (MUNIX) along with Multi-Motor unit Analysis (MMA) and Turns & Amplitude (TA) methods available on Natus EMG systems. His primary research interest is in Automatic analysis of EMG signals, Modeling EMG signals and Technical aspects of EMG waveforms. Sanjeev is currently a Senior Consultant at Natus Medical. Sanjeev is also Adjunct Professor of Neurology at Medical College of Wisconsin.

Marta Soares Santos has a Bachelor’s Degree in Neurophysiology and a Master’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering from Escola Superior de Biotecnologia of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa (Portugal). She has 9 years’ experience in clinical neurophysiology roles in hospitals, as well as product and sales knowledge in medical devices companies in Portugal. In parallel, she was an invited EMG teacher at Escola Superior de Tecnologias da Saude of the Instituto Politecnico de Coimbra. Marta joined Natus in 2023 as an International Clinical Applications Specialist EMG/EP/US for the EMEA region.

Francesco has a bachelor’s degree in Electronic Engineering and master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering from University of Florence (Italy), internship at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. He has more than 10 years’ experience in EEG clinical applications in different roles in sales and marketing. Franscesco worked for 5 years for an Italian company as EEG/LTM Product Manager and Area Manager. He joined Natus Neuro in 2015 as Clinical Application Specialist for EEG/LTM/PSG for EMEA region.
