This 2-day course provides you with a basic understanding of Electromyograms (EMGs) and Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) and how they are used in neurodiagnostic medicine. We will study and review basic electrical theory, instrumentation, peripheral nerve anatomy and physiology, recording methods and waveforms recognition with clinical correlations. You will emphasize the safety of the patient. In the lab you will learn the basics of nerve and muscle stimulation and recording, using surface electrodes.
Course objectives
- Describe the basic principles of electricity and how they apply to nerve conduction studies
- Describe instrumentation and controls that aid in nerve conduction testing
- Demonstrate an understanding of peripheral nerve anatomy and physiology
- Describe the various measurements, calculations and test parameters vital in NCS testing
- Demonstrate the ability to record the most common studies of most labs
- Describe the Needle EMG and the role of the technologist
- Demonstrate an understanding of diseases and disorders of the peripheral nervous system
Intended audience: Physicians and technologists who would like to enhance/review electrodiagnostic techniques, and get a hands-on experience in performing some of the common and uncommon studies. This is a combined lecture and hands-on course.

He has delivered lectures, workshops and seminars in over 25 countries at universities, hospitals and EMG conferences. As an editor, Sanjeev started the “EMG on DVD” educational series. In collaboration with other clinicians, he developed Motor Unit Number Index (MUNIX) along with Multi-Motor unit Analysis (MMA) and Turns & Amplitude (TA) methods available on Natus EMG systems. His primary research interest is in Automatic analysis of EMG signals, Modeling EMG signals and Technical aspects of EMG waveforms. Sanjeev is currently a Senior Consultant at Natus Medical. Sanjeev is also Adjunct Professor of Neurology at Medical College of Wisconsin.

This course provides you with a greater understanding of Electromyograms (EMGs) and Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) and how they are used in neurodiagnostic medicine. We will study and review peripheral nerve anatomy and physiology, recording methods, and waveforms recognition with clinical correlations. You will emphasize the safety of the patient. Dr. Chelsea Shugars completed her undergraduate studies at Clemson University and attended Medical School at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University. She completed her neurology residency and neuromuscular medicine fellowship at Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem. Dr. Shugars is currently assistant professor at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine and is a Neuromuscular Medicine Physician at Erlanger Health System, Chattanooga. Dr. Shugars has been practicing NMUS for over 4 years and was involved with teaching at the Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship at Wake Forest.

Dr. Christoph Neuwirth has focused since nearly 20 years on neuromuscular disorders. Beside clinical practice, his research interests are on electrophysiological methods to estimate the number of lower motor neurons (MUNIX) and clinical trials in diseases like ALS, Myasthenia gravis and other rare neuromuscular disorders. The application and teaching of electrophysiological methods is one further main interest in his daily practice as the Deputy Head at the Swiss Reference Center for Rare Neuromuscular Diseases, based at the Cantonal Hospital St. Gallen, Switzerland.

Prof. Dr. Markus Weber is Professor of Neurology at the University of Basel and serves as chief of the Neuromuscular Diseases Unit/ ALS Clinic at the Kantonsspital St.Gallen in Switzerland. He has worked for more than 30 years in the field of neuromuscular disorders with a special focus on Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and clinical neurophysiology. His main research interests cover outcome measures, clinical neurophysiology, trial designs and cannabinoid research. Prof. Weber is a member of the ENCALS executive committee and research committee of the European Neuromuscular Center (ENMC). He has previously served as co-chair of the European Academy of Neurology scientific panel on ALS and FTD.

With over 30 years of experience, Sanjeev is an award winning author, editor and reviewer, researcher, instrument design engineer, teacher, and clinical expert in the EMG field. He has delivered lectures, workshops and seminars in over 25 countries at universities, hospitals and EMG conferences. As an editor, Sanjeev started the “EMG on DVD” educational series. In collaboration with other clinicians, he developed Motor Unit Number Index (MUNIX) along with Multi-Motor unit Analysis (MMA) and Turns & Amplitude (TA) methods available on Natus EMG systems. His primary research interest is in Automatic analysis of EMG signals, Modeling EMG signals and Technical aspects of EMG waveforms. Sanjeev is currently a Senior Consultant at Natus Medical. Sanjeev is also Adjunct Professor of Neurology at Medical College of Wisconsin.

She has 9 years’ experience in clinical neurophysiology roles in hospitals, as well as product and sales knowledge in medical devices companies in Portugal. In parallel, she was an invited EMG teacher at Escola Superior de Tecnologias da Saude of the Instituto Politecnico de Coimbra. This 2-day course provides you with a basic understanding of Electromyograms (EMGs) and Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS) and how they are used in neurodiagnostic medicine. We will study and review basic electrical theory, instrumentation, peripheral nerve anatomy and physiology, recording methods and waveforms recognition with clinical correlations. You will emphasize the safety of the patient. In the lab you will learn the basics of nerve and muscle stimulation and recording, using surface electrodes.
Course objectives
- Describe the basic principles of electricity and how they apply to nerve conduction studies
- Describe instrumentation and controls that aid in nerve conduction testing
- Demonstrate an understanding of peripheral nerve anatomy and physiology
- Describe the various measurements, calculations and test parameters vital in NCS testing
- Demonstrate the ability to record the most common studies of most labs
- Describe the Needle EMG and the role of the technologist
- Demonstrate an understanding of diseases and disorders of the peripheral nervous system

He has delivered lectures, workshops and seminars in over 25 countries at universities, hospitals and EMG conferences. As an editor, Sanjeev started the “EMG on DVD” educational series. In collaboration with other clinicians, he developed Motor Unit Number Index (MUNIX) along with Multi-Motor unit Analysis (MMA) and Turns & Amplitude (TA) methods available on Natus EMG systems. His primary research interest is in Automatic analysis of EMG signals, Modeling EMG signals and Technical aspects of EMG waveforms. Sanjeev is currently a Senior Consultant at Natus Medical. Sanjeev is also Adjunct Professor of Neurology at Medical College of Wisconsin.

She completed her neurology residency and neuromuscular medicine fellowship at Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem. Dr. Shugars is currently assistant professor at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine and is a Neuromuscular Medicine Physician at Erlanger Health System, Chattanooga. Dr. Shugars has been practicing NMUS for over 4 years and was involved with teaching at the Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship at Wake Forest.

Course objectives:
- Practical application and interpretation of conventional neurography, electromyographic methods, Repetitive Nerve Stimulation and Single-fibre-EMG with CNE as well as Motor Unit Number Index (MUNIX).
- Upon successful completion of the course, participants will understand the physiology, be able to practice the techniques, know about pitfalls, and interpret results.
Intended audience: Physicians and technologists who would like to enhance/review electrodiagnostic techniques, and get a hands-on experience in performing some of the common and uncommon studies. This is a combined two-day lecture and hands-on course.

Dr. Christoph Neuwirth has focused since nearly 20 years on neuromuscular disorders. Beside clinical practice, his research interests are on electrophysiological methods to estimate the number of lower motor neurons (MUNIX) and clinical trials in diseases like ALS, Myasthenia gravis and other rare neuromuscular disorders. The application and teaching of electrophysiological methods is one further main interest in his daily practice as the Deputy Head at the Swiss Reference Center for Rare Neuromuscular Diseases, based at the Cantonal Hospital St. Gallen, Switzerland.

Prof. Dr. Markus Weber is Professor of Neurology at the University of Basel and serves as chief of the Neuromuscular Diseases Unit/ ALS Clinic at the Kantonsspital St.Gallen in Switzerland. He has worked for more than 30 years in the field of neuromuscular disorders with a special focus on Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and clinical neurophysiology. His main research interests cover outcome measures, clinical neurophysiology, trial designs and cannabinoid research. Prof. Weber is a member of the ENCALS executive committee and research committee of the European Neuromuscular Center (ENMC). He has previously served as co-chair of the European Academy of Neurology scientific panel on ALS and FTD.

With over 30 years of experience, Sanjeev is an award winning author, editor and reviewer, researcher, instrument design engineer, teacher, and clinical expert in the EMG field. He has delivered lectures, workshops and seminars in over 25 countries at universities, hospitals and EMG conferences. As an editor, Sanjeev started the “EMG on DVD” educational series. In collaboration with other clinicians, he developed Motor Unit Number Index (MUNIX) along with Multi-Motor unit Analysis (MMA) and Turns & Amplitude (TA) methods available on Natus EMG systems. His primary research interest is in Automatic analysis of EMG signals, Modeling EMG signals and Technical aspects of EMG waveforms. Sanjeev is currently a Senior Consultant at Natus Medical. Sanjeev is also Adjunct Professor of Neurology at Medical College of Wisconsin.

Riccardo Pasqui
Riccardo Pasqui owns a specialization in computer science and an extensive 19 years’
experience in the medical devices industry for Neurophysiology. His professional
experience comprises roles such as helpdesk manager, product specialist, integration
specialist for the interoperability of medical devices with a focus on EHR/EMR, based on
HL7, DICOM, CDA, FHIR, and dedicated Web Services.Riccardo was a Data Protection Officer (2016/679 | GDPR) and is currently a member of
HL7 Italy (part of HL7 International Consortium) and of the Italian Society of Telemedicine.
He joined Natus in 2021 as part of the international CAP team and currently continues to
promote high standards of education specifically on IT, HL7 integration and Data Security.

Marta Soares Santos has a Bachelor’s Degree in Neurophysiology and a Master’s Degree in Biomedical Engineering from Escola Superior de Biotecnologia of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa (Portugal). She has 9 years’ experience in clinical neurophysiology roles in hospitals, as well as product and sales knowledge in medical devices companies in Portugal. In parallel, she was an invited EMG teacher at Escola Superior de Tecnologias da Saude of the Instituto Politecnico de Coimbra. Marta joined Natus in 2023 as an International Clinical Applications Specialist EMG/EP/US for the EMEA region.
