Course introduction:
This eSeminar, presented by Dr. Aline Herlopian from Yale University, will discuss two different epilepsy types: genetic generalized epilepsies and combined generalized and focal epilepsies. Cases will be presented to illustrate typical clinical presentation, EEG findings, and medication management.
Learning Objectives:
At the conclusion of this eseminar the participants will be able to:

- Identify the clinical characteristics of genetic generalized and combined generalized and focal epilepsy types
- Introduce the audience to the typical and atypical EEG findings in these two epilepsy types
- Medication management in both patient populations

Dr. Aline Herlopian
Dr. Aline Herlopian
MD
Dr. Aline Herlopian is an Assistant Professor of Neurology at Yale School of Medicine and specializes in Critical Care Medicine and treating patients with epilepsy. Dr. Herlopian is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and Clinical Neurophysiology. She earned her Doctor of Medicine degree at the American University of Beirut with residency training at the University of Arkansas followed by fellowship training in Clinical Neurophysiology and epilepsy at Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School. Early on in her training she became fascinated by epilepsy after learning how dynamic neural networks in the brain can communicate abnormally and sometimes resulting in seizures. In her daily practice, Dr. Herlopian enjoys combining her clinical research work with patient care. Her main interest is caring for patients with catastrophic epilepsies, and seizures that fail to respond to seizure medications. She explores various treatments such as brain stimulation, laser therapy, and surgical resection in patients who did not respond to seizure medications with the aim of improving their quality of life. Dr. Herlopian’s research interests have led to numerous publications on Epilepsy, Status Epilepticus, EEG, and Encephalopathy just to cite a few.

In this presentation Dr. Hawryluk from the Cleveland Clinic will discuss current perspectives on intracranial pressure monitoring in brain injured patients. This will include new perspectives on the physiology of intracranial pressure elevation and when monitors should be placed. The eSeminar will also discuss recent progress in advanced neuromonitoring and emerging uses.
Course Objectives:

- Understand Rosner’s vasodilatory and vasoconstriction cascades and the role of cerebral blood volume in intracranial pressure
- Become familiar with SIBICC consensus views on ICP monitor insertion
- Understand novel advanced neuromonitoring strategies

Dr. Gregory Hawryluk
Dr. Gregory Hawryluk
MD, PhD
Dr. Gregory Hawryluk is currently a Neurosurgeon at Cleveland Clinic and Medical Director of the Brain Trauma Foundation. Dr. Hawryluk completed his neurosurgical residency at the University of Toronto. During this time he also completed a basic science PhD in Neural Repair and Regeneration under the supervision of Dr. Michael Fehlings which examined the mechanism by which neural precursor cells augment recovery from spinal cord injury. Dr. Hawryluk leads the development of the Brain Trauma Foundation's head injury guidelines. He Co-Directed the development of the SIBICC algorithms and is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards for academic achievements such as the Murray Goldstein Award of the National Neurotrauma Society as well as the University Health Network’s Sopman Humanitarian Award. Dr. Hawryluk’s specific expertise is in spine and brain trauma.
