Event Details

Course introduction:
The set-up of new integrated clinical services is often complex, especially in conditions of limited resources. Continuous Critical Care Electroencephalography (CCCEG) has been recognised to be an important neuromonitoring tool in adult Intensive Care Patients with and without brain damage for the diagnosis of seizures and prognostication of neurological outcome. In this talk we would like to summarise some key practical aspects to take into consideration for the development of a CCCEEG service and review the most common clinical indications for this type of neuromonitoring technique.

Course Objectives:

  • Practical considerations in the set-up of a CCCEEG service (electrodes, montages, acquisition machines, review stations, etc.)
  • Staffing models used in the development of CCCEEG services
  • Who and how long to monitor: clinical indications for CCCEEG in critical care

Speakers for this event

    Dr. Lara Prisco

Dr. Lara Prisco trained in Anaesthetics, Intensive Care and Hyperbaric Medicine in 2012 at the University of Trieste (Italy) starting off her research activities exploring traumatic brain injury outcome predictors and neurophysiology biomarkers of recovery of consciousness following brain injury, after a Research Fellowship spent at the Coma Science Group in Liège (Belgium).
In 2012, she moved to the UK as Clinical Fellow in Intensive Care at the General Intensive Care Unit of the University College Hospital in London and in the same year obtained the first Fellowship in Echocardiography in Critical Care at St.George’s Hospital. Afterwards, Dr Prisco completed her advanced training in Neuroanaesthesia and Neurointensive Care Medicine at both the Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit (National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, UCLH London) and Neurosciences Critical Care Unit (Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge).
In 2015 she was appointed Locum Clinical Lecturer at the University Department of Anaesthesia at the University of Cambridge and collaborated in several large multi-centre studies in NeuroCritical Care.
Since May 2016, she works as Consultant in Neuroanaesthesia and Neurocritical Care at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford and has taken up the role of Research Lead in Neurocritical Care.
As Senior Clinical Research Fellow at the Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences of the University of Oxford, Dr Prisco explores EEG/fMRI biomarkers of acute disorders of consciousness after traumatic brain injury and holds a Doctoral Research Fellowship funded by the National Institute for Health Research.
Dr Prisco is also interested in the clinical and research development of Continuous ElectroEncephaloGraphy in Critical Care (CCEEG) and is leading the CCEEG service in Oxford.
