Event Details

Course introduction:
The lecture will summarize the electrodiagnostic changes in ALS and how they are explained regarding its pathogenesis. This topic will permit us to address the diagnostic guidelines, including historical changes and the updated version. Information about testing its sensitivity and specificity will be shared. A number of real cases will be introduced to discuss diagnosis in order to stress limitations and difficulties, discussing mimicking disorders. Finally, additional relevant information from specific neurophysiological observations will be stressed to increment the utility of routine EMG. Conclusions remarks will finish the lecture.

Mamede de Carvalho, M.D. Ph.D. Prof de Carvalho studies neurodegenerative and neuromuscular disorders, in particular applying neurophysiological methods to investigate disease mechanisms and adaptation, studying how the disorder of the motor system impact on patients function, and exploring the interplay between environmental features-genotype-phenotype in those diseases. Prof de Carvalho has an educational background on neurology and neurophysiology, and more than 30 years continuous experience in medical research. Different areas have been involved in his investigations, supported by large databases and big data extraction, including neurophysiology, bioengineering, molecular biomarkers, genetics, imaging, data mining and machine-learning statistics, and mathematical models for epidemiology findings. For these purposes he has established a strong net of national and international collaborations, and developed a large unit covering different expertise.
